(I can't seem to find any info on this...let me know if i'm reposting)
My G5 seems to be in fine working order, except whenever I try to shut it down or restart it, it gets stuck at the blue screen with spinning wheel.
For a while I've had to force it to turn off by holding the power button. Sometimes if I try to turn it back on within 5-10 seconds of forcing it off, the fans will whir loudly and nothing else will happen. Any thoughts on how to remedy this?

When it's running, go here: AppleJack 1.4.3 - Mac OS X - VersionTracker download and install applejack. However you can, restart it holding down the command and the S keys at the same time. Follow the instructions at the bottom of the command line, run thw whole suite and then restart as per applejack's instructions. See if that helps. I strongly urge you to backup all data immediately!! as we don't know whther this some kind of hardware problem. Post back with the results and we all will try to figure this out.

A former boss of mine had just about the exact same problem you are describing. She ended up bring it into an Apple store and they told her that her hard drive was dying. They transferred as much of her data over to a new hard drive but somethings couldn't.
Sorry to give you bad news. Your problem could be different but I would recommend taking into an Apple store pretty soon. You want to allow Apple to transfer all your data now to a new hard drive before or if your hard drive fails. If it's not a hard drive problem then hopefully they will know what it is. If you haven't already you should invest in an external hard drive to backup your data on a regular basis.

Sometimes an archive & install of your OS will sort this. Backing up first is always a good idea.

This isn't indicative of hard drive failure.
1. Backup your stuff.
2. Run "First Aid" on the drive with Disk Utility.
3. Repair Permissions.
4. Run DiskWarrior if you have a copy.
5. Create a new user and see if the problem persists.
6. Archive and install.

I really appreciate all the help! It turns out that unplugging my printer solved the problem. It's a lexmark x1150, so the company offers no updated support or drivers. Any advice besides getting a better printer?
