How can I put my Home Folder inside an external FireWire Drive? I tired of backing up that folder, I wish I can put it on an external drive and forget about it!

macosxhints.com - Enable multiple home folders on different disks

Though what this has to do with backing up, I have no idea. This won't be any safer than leaving it on the internal disk and just not backing up.

Let me explain myself here... I do a lot of work with the iLife Suite and iWork, and My Mac runs on a 80 gig Hard drive, it get full very fast, and I mean very fast. With Videos, Podcasts, .Mp3s I start having my Mac working very slow in no time. So, I always back up my Home folder and start over again, but when I search for something old I need to go to the back up HD to search for something and then go back and work with the "New Home Folder" ... Space is the problem here, if I could have the Home Folder inside an external 500g HD I always will be able to save and work with my stuff no matter the capacity of my HD! so, I can trust my other backup drive to save all my stuff and have a ONE BIG HOME FOLDER just for myself! thanx for the link though...

For what it's worth, this is the approach I take with my PowerBook: I keep my home folder on my hard drive and put large folders on my external HD, but I make aliases to the external folders in my home folder. That way I can unplug the external drive and even take my PowerBook around places without screwing myself over, but when I'm sitting at my desk at home with the external drive connected, the new files are basically added to my home folder automatically.

Best option - upgrade the internal hard drive. Are you on a powerbook? iBook? ? Unless it is a mini, it really isn't that hard to swap a new one in.

Next best - Keep your home folder on the internal. On the external, just put the movies - they're the drive killers. My 8600 mp3's and podcasts (24,000 minutes) take up 24.5 gig So do a small handful of videos. Get those iMovie project out of the way, and your drive will seem much bigger.
