I've a iMac with no OS on it, and the install CD I have at work is not for this modle so will not install a new OS onto the HD.

What I'm trying to do is access the machine over the network, it's been given an IP but does not seem to have any services avaliable (FTP, SSH, etc) to access it from another Mac and have it restore from an .img.

Firewall is not an option either as we have no Firewire cables here.

Is there anyway to mount this machine over the network from another computer. I have been able to FTP from the blank mac with the use of a USB stick, but unable to open the port 22, is this possible to open?

Thanks inadvance.

The only way you can restore it with a disk image over the network using an Install DVD is via HTTP. You need to put your disk image on a web server and enter the URL in Disk Utility under the Restore tab. Of course, you have another OS license for this disk image, right?

Otherwise, you need to buy a Tiger DVD, buy a FireWire cable, or use OS X Server and NetInstall.

Yes, it's a College machine and I'm the new and only Mac Technician here, the problems happened because no one knows where they put all the install CD's for these machines, they assumed any install CD would work from previous ones which they don't.

Anyway thank you for your response.

StuartTait >> Try calling Apple support, they may be able to provide you with install discs.

Option 2 .. ebay: imac os x install disc, Software, Computers Networking items on eBay.com

or... the disc image route which you're trying out now.

Firewire cables - Yes I personally own one, far as I can tell after going though a box of cables they don't. If I'd known I was going to need it I'd have brought it in. This has been added to my list of equipment I'll be shopping for.

By way of the disks, I hope it will turn up at some point, I'll be keeping these disks safe in future of course.

This was more of a thread aimed to see if I can get any ideas in within todays working hours.

I gotcha. Sounds like you've got some work ahead of you whipping that place into shape.

You can also contact your Apple rep to see if they can get you a DVD. If it's a PowerPC iMac, you can also just get a retail Tiger DVD. The retail version is 10.4.6 and will work for all PowerPC Macs that Tiger supports. It would be a good thing to have in your arsenal.
