Hi All!
Every audio recording I do gives 16bit AIFF files instead of 24bit.
Which is quite some loss of headroom.
First I blamed Ableton Live and/or the MOTU Traveler, but none of them is responsible for the fault.

The Audio MIDI Setup shows every input option (line/micro/traveler) as being set at 24bit.
Even when recording an audio track in Garage Band with the internal microphone it's in 16bit.
Only when recording a snippet of audio with QuickTime Pro, it shows 24bits for this data.
But then again, that's a .mov container and no AIF file.
That's happening on a MBP, 15" 2.16GHz, 3GB of Ram, 10.4.10 (but also happened with 10.4.8)
Oh yeah, and the same configuration with the traveler on my Mac mini G4 1.5GHz, 10.4.10 works flawlessly, besides the lower performance.

I'm running out of ideas, any hints?

Thank you very much, Michael.

(I do not suspect an application fault rather than a system problem - if that's not the appropriate place to post, I'm sorry!)

Well, before Garageband 4, it couldn't record 24-bit. And IIRC, the internal soundcards only go up to 16-bit.

If I were you, I'd check the Ableton preferences to see if everythings set correctly there.

errm ... I wasn't aware of that.

I agree and this is of course what I checked first ...

I'll dig into this again,
Thanks for pointing this out!
Michael.

Have you also checked to see that you have the latest software/drivers? The fact that it works on the PPC Mac mini might hint at an issue with the Intel system.

I registered at motu.com and see that they have a download called "MOTU Universal Audio Install- OSX", date: 2007/02/14.
This install provides compatibility updates for Mac Intel processors, Tiger OSX 10.4x, and is compatible with OSX versions back to Panther 10.3.x.

Installer contains a driver update for the MOTU 828, 896, 828mk2, 828mk2 USB, 896HD, Traveler, UltraLite and 8pre.

Only the most recent version of GarageBand (with iLife 08) will record in 24 bits.

The MacBook Pro's audio input is 24-bit.

I agree! I installed drivers using this very package back then when getting my MBP.

I'm not sure if I'm mixing up things meahwhile, I'll check again several settings.

Thanks a lot! Michael.
