hi there,

my first problem was,Safari was running fine but when i downloaded any file it would say 'preparing to download file' but it wouldn't go any further, the spinning beachball was on and Safari 3 beta was locked. Only way to reopen Safari was Force Quit..

I thought this might be a problem with the beta so i tried to go back to Safari 2 but half through the uninstall / install got an error and the install stopped..

Now the Safari icon has a question mark over and none of the iLife programs are working. When i try and start them from the Dock they just 'bounce' once but dont start..

This also happens with Installer and any mpkg i try to open so i cant reinstall anything....

Any help would be grateful as i dont want shift 250gb to format..

cheers..

I'm not sure what "Progis" means in the title of your post, but if you changed it to "programs" you might get more responses.

If all the programs are broken then the problem is not restricted to the Safari beta. For the download issue, try opening the Activity Monitor (in Applications->Utilities). If you don't see the window with all the activity, try the View->Activiity Monitor menu option. Look at the download and upload speed. Also look at the CPU activity to see if a certain process is hogging the CPU.

For all of the other problems, it is difficult to determine the problem. Here are some generic things to do:
1) boot from your OS X DVD and then look in the menu for the option to "run Disk Utility." You can the use the "verify disk" option in Disk Utility. If you have multiple internal hard drives, you can boot from another volume and do this.
2) run Disk Utility (in Applications->Utilities folder) to "repair permissions" on the hard drive (you can do this without booting from the install disk).
3) save a copy of the ~/Library/Preferences folder and the /Library/Preferences folder to an external drive (one folder is in the root and one is in your home directory).
4) try deleting preferences for your various iLife programs. Some file names might begin with com.apple.the program name and some might begin with the regular program name. If there was a disk problem and the preference file were corrupted, you would have lots of problems. This is not too unusual.
5) boot while holding the shift key the entire time (use the mouse to submit your password upon login). This should reduce the number of junk programs that run at startup. If this helps, then maybe something running in the background is causing problems.
6) if you do have to reformat your drive, save everything on an external drive and then partition your disk so that you store a minimal amount of data on the boot volume. Put your personal files and even downloaded applications on the other partition. This will make your boot volume smaller so that it is easier to create and restore full images using Disk Utility.

could that be the problem -- a full HD? What's the size, how much is used, how much unused?

Mmm... pierogies...

Anyway, have you tried launching the Console app that's in your Utilities folder, and then trying to launch one of these apps and seeing what appears in the Console when it fails to launch?

Well, that would explain it.

Is WebKit.framework present in /System/Library/Frameworks?

Do you have read permissions for it?

Double-click on your hard drive on the desktop.

double-click on the "System" folder.

Double-click on the "Library" folder.

Double-click on the "Frameworks" folder.

Is there a file in there called "WebKit.framework"?

Are any of those folders missing?

Have you moved anything around recently? (such as the folder called "System" at the top-most level of your hard disk hierarchy)

Do an archive and install from the original install disk (second option under "Options..." before you install).

Be sure to run Disk Utility's first aid check before you do (from the install disk) and repair any directory damage.

Using "archive and install" will simply replace the system and default apps, but keep all your data and user preferences intact.

You could also just reinstall the Safari 3 package to get WebKit back, albeit the 3.0 beta version.

You could also use Pacifist to pull WebKit.framework out of the install packages, although as there might be other stuff missing as well, you might want to go for the full reinstall.

In addition to the possible missing file (the webkit thing), if your disk has only 14GB free out of 250GB, it could be very slow. I know for earlier versions of OS X, the general rule was that OS X works best if the disk is half empty so that the OS can keep the disk from getting to fragmented.

I hope that you already have an external drive for backup purposes, you might want to get more more drive space and put your least-used files on an external drive. Remember that if you move stuff onto an external drive, you should have a second copy for backup purposes (that means buying two more external drives or getting a bigger internal drive in addition to another external drive).

sorry, you was right about the Framework folder, its is on this Macbook..

think im gonna go for a full install, just in the process off moving the files now..

thanks for all your help on the subject, it is always nice to fix a problem rather than reinstalling the whole HD, but this is not always possible.

thanks again..

You don't have to erase the hard drive to do a full install - just check the "Archive and Install" check box while in the Installer, and it will move all the existing system files off to the side and put a clean new installation in its place, while leaving your user folder and applications intact.

Assuming you've got enough hard disk space to do so, of course.
