I have exactly the same problem.
This issues occurs in all of your computers or just 1?
If it occurs on your macpro then we might be closer to a solution. For me it happens on my macpro which is close to your specs.

This is happening on my iMac C2D, it only happens sometimes, and yes, it is very annoying. I haven't run any tests, but it only happens when moving files between my external HD and Internal and viaca versa.
iMac C2D 2.1 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 500 GB HD

It could be your RAM. hard drive, OS, some rouge application....You need to start troubleshooting.

This sounds like an on-going bug that has been in the Finder since 10.0. There is no exact explanation to pin it on, but it seems like it may be connected to corrupted files, especially images with corrupted preview icons. I expect it will be fixed (along with a number of other bugs) in Leopard, but I'm not holding my breath. Are any of the files you're moving in a folder with icon previews on? Sometimes, turning icon previews off will help.
