I've got a really strange problem with a friend's Mac. Anytime he attempts to open a file in a dialog box, it will crash the program. For example, in firefox I saw him make the attempt to attach a file in the dialog box and seconds later the whole app crashed.

I thought for sure it was a browser issue, so I had him try the same ting in safari and then in opera. Same deal. So then I figured it must be the website. But he said he had the same issue in Word a while back. So we tested it out with Word and it happened again.

The only thing i could think of was trashing his finder preference file, but that did not help.

Weird. Any 'open file' crashes any app?

He could try an archive-install. Seems the simplest way to try and fix such a pervasive issue.

When did it start happening? Did it coincide with any new hardware or software installations your friend made?
