Anyone have any thoughts on the prospects of a price drop on 10.4 when Apple releases leopard?

I'm running a 1.5 Ghz 12" pbook and haven't yet upgraded from panther. Seems like a good idea to hold off at this point before I finally hop to and upgrade.

It might drop at some independent resellers, but at Apple stores it'll most likely just disappear.

That I had not considered... perhaps it's no or never for me, eh?

You could probably buy a cheap copy off of someone who was upgrading to Leopard, or has a PPC version collecting dust (like me: I had a retail 10.4 installed on a 12" PB, but have since migrated to Intel Macs).

So I haven't done the upgrade thing before on a Mac. It is my understanding that I could use the version of iLife that came with my machine (on my 10.3 install discs) if I were to upgrade to Tiger. Otherwise, iLife does not come bundled with the OS upgrade.

Is there a sweet spot if I were to shop for iLife & Tiger at the same time? That is, I'm thinking ilife 07 or 08 might be overkill for a PPC machine running Tiger. Would '05 be the best fit for the money?

It's all on a college kid's budget, so I like to take my steps wisely.

Even if you find a place that's selling Panther right now, it's usually not much less than a new copy of Tiger would be. I don't think Tiger will be any different when Leopard is out.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

I understand that. Is there a version of iLife that will be best suited to a PPC running Tiger (my assumption being that iLife 07 or 08 is overkill and that I won't use all of its features since they're aimed at Leopard users)?

OWC (macsales.com) sometimes sells 'prior' OS X at low prices… you could check their web site now and then which would be kinda annoying, so if you have an e-mail account which you wouldn't mind getting OWC plain text mails about their offerings, that would let you know if they have such a 10.4 retail copy at low cost.

As for iLife, I would stick to iLife '06 which runs great under a MDD Power Mac which is 250MHz slower than your PowerBook.

Then, clarify there is not such iLife '07

My ignorance aside, thanks much for the suggestion.
