I'm having a number of small but disturbing problems with my intel iMac that don't seem to come up on google searches, and I'm wondering if they're all related.

1) By far the one that scares me the most is the graphical problem: if I put it to sleep, and then wake it up it will show a black screen with square blocks of my wallpaper and text all jumbled up on the top portion of the screen, I can see that this is the picture of the login box that takes me out of sleep mode, and it will let me login though I can't physically see the box I can type the password. However upon coming to the desktop it shows the same graphical error boxes at the top portion of the screen.

2) My hardrive icon randomly moves to the bottom of the stack of icons, I can't figure out why or how to fix it.

3) My center mouse button and two side buttons on the mac mouse randomly change function from dashboard-expose all windows to just button 3 and 4. It's uncontrollable and I can go into settings and change them back, but it happens often for no reason.

Thanks for any help.

Could also just be bad RAM. I suppose having somebody look at it would tell one way or the other.

you can def have it checked out at a genius bar...or call apple, see what your options are.
worse-case scenario, take it to an apple-authorized repair shop.

but get it looked at!

Is it less than a year old? If so it is under warranty.

Second-hand or five-finger discount?

Second hand, I bought it from a guy who was moving out of town, we're both art majors so it was convienant that he had alot of the programs I needed for my major. He case modded it, the front panel is clear and that foil stuff behind it is pulled up a bit, you can see it though the plastic. Would that impede anything with getting apple to look at it? That's why I haven't taken it yet, I know microsoft won't service my xbox 360 since I popped the covers off so I figured apple was the same way.

If its been obviously modded then they'll probably have a problem with that. How old is it?

I can't imagine Apple wouldn't look at it for a fee, and I'm sure they'll hassle you about the mods. I keep thinking about their attitude towards mods in general, for instance the iPhone, and Apple just isn't mod friendly.

Still, I can't see them not at least taking a look at the thing, though you'll have to pay. If they won't look, then a certified dealer might. Give it a try.

You could at least bring it in and have them take a look at it. Or at least somebody who knows what they are doing. There's nothing to lose! Besides maybe a little bit of cash. You wont know until you try
