I've finally been playing around with non-'quartz-wm' window managers for X11, as I'm spending more and more time in X11 these days (xfig, xdrawchem for some reason lately, xterm, etc.), and recently I've gotten fvwm2 and fluxbox working fine.

I do have one major problem with both of these wms: live updating of window position seems absent. I suppose since quartz-wm takes advantage of hardware acceleration it can easily move around nicely and the window goes wherever you drag it (refraining from referencing my non-existent girlfriend here), but the windows in fvwm2 and fluxbox bring up that somewhat useful but annoying cursor position box. I'd rather have live updating windows. Anyone know of a way to make that work? Is it a setting, or do I need a totally different wm?

Look under 'Fluxbox menu > Configure > Opaque window dragging.' That should allow you to drag a window and see the contents (instead of just the window's outline).

I don't know about getting rid of the window position box. Maybe it's a compilation option (just like in/excluding the slit). Is it that annoying that you'd have to use another WM?

Thanks for the response. I kind of like the positioning - appeals to my accuracy sensibilities. But the lack of opaque windows is driving me slightly nuts. I've sort of moved back to quartz-wm after fvwm2rc and related frustrations. But willing to give it another go.

Lack of opaque windows? Are windows all transparent in fvwm?

Yeah, my question too. Did selecting that option not give you opaque window dragging?

Which version are you using? Works fine for me in 1.0rc3.
