Im trying to play Deus ex on parallels - which works. However, I need to have the game CD in the drive in order to play. It turn out that in DE f12 is used to toggle an in game option, which I cant change. So every time I press f12, mac osx ejects the disc - thus killing the game. I've tried to go to system preferences (under keyboard and mouse) to change this but there is no option to change the f12 eject disc option. Is there any way I can change f12- eject disc key modifier?
I've even tried to reassign the f12 key to do something benign - like toggle zoom on/off - but still mac os x wants to eject the cd drive....

In keyboard and mouse there should be something about switching fn keys and F keys... Try messing with that. Sorry for the crap description.

adam is right. In Keyboard and Mouse there's the "Use F1-F12 keys to control software features". You want to select that.

10.4.11? I wasn't aware that was out yet.

It should be right in the Keyboard section of the Keyboard and Mouse preference pane. It's obvious.

Maybe it's obvious when you have a laptop. I'm not seeing that option from my desktop.

The desktop keyboard has a dedicated eject key. It's not F12.

Not necessarily. Older iBooks and PowerBooks share the F12 key with eject.

Yes, older laptops do. And he has a PowerBook. But he's running Parallels. So he must be on his Mac Pro.

Doesn't the wireless keyboard have an F12 key that doubles as the eject key? If so, is that what you are using, tkmd?

TETENAL beat me to it, I was just looking that up. So I don't see where the problem lies.

The titanium PowerBooks use F12 and eject on the same keyboard.

Not everybody with a desktop uses a standard Mac keyboard. The documentation that comes with the MacMini even says you can use "almost any USB keyboard" since it doesn't come with one.

However, with a non-Mac keyboard, the default behaviour of F12 (if a CD is inserted) is to randomly either open the dashboard or eject the CD. I think what's supposed to happen is it only ejects if you hold F12 for a while, but I've had it eject after only a quick press.

I would be very interested in learning how to disable the eject behaviour completely on non-Mac keyboards.
