is it ok to delete this folder?

As pathetic as it sounds, i really need that extra 1gb its taking up, and the only reason i've kept it this long is for an occasional game of Sim City 2000.

Yup.
OS X will not let you throw out the System Folder in one shot.
Easiest way is to open it up, select all the stuff inside, delete them. Log out, log in then throw out the folder itself. Be careful! OS X lives in a folder called "System". System 9 lives in the "System Folder".

You could probably be using this already, but if not, check out WhatSize -- it'll help you find the biggest space users on your hard drive. Depending on your use, there's a lot of extra stuff that's pre-installed with iLife (e.g. themes, garage band loops, etc) that you may not need.

If you are down to your last 1 GB on your hard drive, you desperately need a bigger HD. You can reclaim that space, but making the HD fit things in that tight is asking for trouble. Saving things will take longer and longer; disk damage will come frequently.
