The retail discs of OS X 10.4 are PPC only. You can't install it on an Intel machine. Why do you want to install from the new disc? Are you having problems with your Software Restore/Install discs that came with the MacBook?

All original Install disks are specific for the machine they shipped with. Why do you want to install off of the retail version of Tiger? As JTK said, it is for PPC Macs only, but even if it did work, it would install Tiger. Just like your original disks.

Contact Apple, either directly or go to an Apple Store. They are very good about replacing damaged system disks.

Did you even read the requirements on the box before buying? Not being rude here, but the retail version is at 10.4.6, been that way for about 2 years now.

Actually, they suck at it. They really, really, really suck at it. The second disc that came with my iMac was damaged, and after about a year of trying to get Apple to send me a replacement, I eventually gave up. The first time, they sent me a PowerBook G4 disc, which was not only the wrong disc but was also damaged in the weirdest way I've ever seen - the file system would show up intact, but if you tried to read any file on the disc, you'd get some random chunk of your computer's RAM. I could copy a Read Me file to the Desktop several times, and the result would be a different bunch of random binary data every time, although oddly enough the file size would be correct, and it would have data from running programs, Objective-C class names, etc. in it.
The second time I called, the tech support rep apologized to me and sent out another disc - which turned out to be another PowerBook G4 disc identical to the first one - weird scrambled files and all.
The third time I called, I spent an hour with some guy in a call center in India just trying to dictate my address to him. He couldn't understand a word I said. Or a letter I said, for that matter - when I tried to spell out the name of the city I was in, for instance, he couldn't understand the letters. He also couldn't understand the concept of what a "state" is in a US address (he kept asking me for a "county"), nor why it would be spelled with two letters. He kept asking me to spell out "Orange Campus" (actually I was trying to tell him I was in Lawrence, KS), and absolutely would not accept the two letter spelling of "Campus". He also had no idea what I meant when I tried to tell him my address was already on file, and he could just look it up. To add to the hilarity, I could hear lots of yelling (yes, yelling) in some foreign language in the background, accompanied by frequent occurrences of the Windows 98 beep sound. Eventually I got transferred to someone who actually spoke English, who apologized to me and said he was sending the disc out. Which never arrived.
The next few calls were of the "Sorry, our system seems to be messed up, please call back in a couple weeks so we can sort this out" type.
All calls after that point were of the "So sorry for your trouble, I am sending a replacement disc out right away" and then the disc never arrives type.
Eventually my iMac was out of warranty, so I was no longer eligible for the replacement disc. What I ended up doing, and what you should do too if you value your time, was just to go into an Apple store with a dual-layer DVD+R, explain my situation, and talk them into burning a copy of one of their install discs for me. God knows trying to get the phone guys to send a replacement disc is a waste of time.

Miscommunication is definitely Apple's middle name. I had my fair share of issues with Apple staff over the phone as well.

I'd try to return it, explaining that it doesn't work on your Macintel.

Maybe if you explain the situation you can at least negotiate to exchange it for Leopard, then they're not losing a sale...

Have they told you that or are you just assuming? It's not as though an operating system is something that's hard to rebox.

I think that's the law. In Canada anyway. You cannot return an opened software, unless it's damaged, and they only exchange it for the exact same thing.

They're afraid of piracy, so you lose the right to return it. I still think you should explain the situation to them and see what they can do.
If you want to be obnoxious, say that you saw the license agreement at boot and that you don't agree with it. I think the agreement says that you should return the product if you don't agree with the license. There was no way to see the license agreement without opening the box, now was there?

Talk to the store manager and they'll probably return your money, open or not. I returned an XP upgrade CD just fine one time.

Depends on personal experience i guess. When one of my Panther CD's broke, I took the remains to the local Apple store and they just handed me a new box.
Being so close to the Leopard announcement if you got it in the last few days you might be able to score yourself a free or reduced price copy of Leopard.
