Didn't the price used to be $69 for OS X student edition? It is now $116 - how is a poor student like me supposed to afford that?

That's barely even a discount. I wonder what the heck happened???

(Not a student any more and will be paying full price, but still...)

All glory to the hypnotoad.

yeah the regular price is still $129. I was planning on ordering it if it were $69.

So you're not going to upgrade to 10.5, or you're not going to buy 10.5?

The education discounts have consistently been going down over the last few years. There is no iPod discount, and the discount on the Mac Mini is a mere $20. Other new products don't have a discount and never have - Apple TV, iPhone, iPod Nano...

I'm in law school, I am smart enough to know how to answer that question

I won't be preordering it - maybe wait and ask for it for Christmas or wait until I purchase a new computer.

It's still £60 in the UK. (For once, we get a decent exchange rate!)
What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

yeah apparently not. I don't know why they raised the education discount without a change in the regular price.

They're probably right. Still think it's kind of crap for them to do it, though.

Maybe they were just bringing the OS X educational price in line with the rest of their products - closer to 10 % rather than about a 40% discount.

As far as it being abused, that is a possibility but I don't think that it was a widespread problem. You have to have a student ID and they check this information very closely. Maybe a few people bought OS X for a non-student buddy, but I can't see this being a huge issue.

Still makes me unhappy.

Do you really? I thought you could just choose the education store, choose a school, choose a product and get it cheap.

You're kidding right. People were able to to sign on to the online education apple store and buy stuff.

I've seen plenty of threads and in other forums proclaiming that they got the edu discount (and weren't students).

I think apple's lack of checking (at the online store) really caused the discount to be abused quite a bit

when I used an education discount at an Apple store they double checked my student ID with my state ID and they recorded my student ID number, presumably to prevent me from using it multiple times in that year.

It doesn't do that with my edu staff discount.

They do verify at the physical Apple Stores. They do not verify at all at the online Apple Store.

Here at UNC we can get iLife and iWork '08 at 39 bucks each, and we'll be able to get Leopard at $69. We'll just most likely have to wait a few days for the Student Stores to get Leopard in - they were a week or two behind the retail stores in getting iLife and iWork. It seems Apple is doing away with the public being able to approach their retail venues to acquire edu software licenses. Here we have to show our UNC ID and they log our purchases to make sure we don't purchase more than the edu agreement allows.

You're getting a different EDU discount. You're getting the Institutional EDU discount. Essentially, your school is buying the software for you at their rate and passing the savings on to you. It's the Individual EDU discounts that have been changed.

Yeah, this kinda sucks, I was expecting it to be way cheaper. But with my iPhone rebate that I saved, and my (small) edu discount, I should be able to walk out of the Apple store with leopard for $16!

Ok, I know I could read the terms&conditions for the answer to this question, but I'm sure someone here knows the answer.

If I have 2 personal computers, an older iMac and a macbook, am I supposed to buy the family pack to install on both machines, even if they're both just mine? I understand buying the single user edition, and using it on my computer and my mother's would be wrong, but what about two of my own computers? How does that work?

I just saw this about leopard on macrumors.com homepage:

Update: According to the comments, Educational institution pricing is still $69, so individual universities may resell Leopard to students/faculty for this discounted price.

Maybe I'll not pre-order, and wait a couple days after leopard's out to see if my school store has it in stock for $69? Definetely worth the wait, as I'll be kicking myself if I buy it for full price and then they have it for 70 dollars.

No, only computers that were purchased on Oct 1 and later that don't have Leopard included.

You cannot even use your educational discount for software at the Apple Retail Store.

I am not blaming on Apple for *raising* the individual student pricing on Leopard. Meanwhile, may be $99 should sound a lot better than $116. I work in a college and many students are excited about Leopard.

I was under the impression that you could get an edu discount at the retail stores as long as you have your student ID? I usually just got the edu discount online, but now I'm at a new school literally 5 min away from an Apple store, so I figured I'd swing by there...but they don't honor the discounts? Or just not on software, but they do on hardware? That doesn't make sense.

It doesn't make sense, but that's how it's been for quite some time: Retail stores only give edu discounts on hardware.

Wow, that does suck. I was expecting to use my iPhone rebate, and I will, but I'll be shelling out $16 instead of buying a new laptop bag. Sign of the times, I guess.

I'm going to send them feedback on it and see what they have to say, if anything. I advise other ed folks to do the same.

Weird. It still shows up as $69 at my alma mater's store (both their own campus store web site and the university's custom Apple store web site).

That makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Ok, kinda in shock here, i didn't think this would work:

my mom bought a macbook a couple of months ago (aug. 23rd), and just for kicks i typed in the serial number into the up-to date program. It said I was eligible, and put the $9.95 leopard in my cart? I obviously bought it, and got to the confirmation page and everything.

I know some people are probably going to write back and say this was wrong, but hey, their system confirmed me, it's not like I hacked it! Plus, if this works, I'll look at is as a reimbursment for the other $100 from the iPhone rebate.

So stoked!

Edit: to be clear, I'll give her this copy, and still buy my own for the $116...just saves money as opposed to having to buy the family pack!

The retail stores now do software discounts also, 10% off just like the online store. I don't think it includes pro apps, but iLife iWork and Leopard now are done at the retail stores.

I guess somehow we saw that coming.

The iPods have been w/o edu discount for how long now? When I bought iWork 08 in Apple's edu staff store I noticed that the discount was a lot less than it used to be for iWork 06. Seeing how widespread edu purchases are and how Apple's market share has been rapidly increasing in (higher) education, I guess they're just trying to make more profit.

Of course that sucks, but I still ordered Leopard. The edu staff store gave me a measly 11% discount. Oh well.

Thank you! That worked for me too! (OK I admit, I had to lie a little.. They asked me the date of purchase, and I initially entered the real date (end of september) and instead of rejecting me, they said to correct the date, which I did )

I was looking at the Japanese price. Man, does it suck here as well. 15,00¥ for it regular. 13,500¥ with an educational discount. Thats a grand total of $12 off. Sadness.
