OK, I'm in the market for a new MB Pro. Waited for Leopard to come out, so I'm most up to date. I want to also upgrade my other machine to Leopard as well (MacBook 1st Gen). When I purchase the MBP, I'll get a system restore disk for Leopard (if the retailer has them in stock) or I will have to go through the Apple Up to Date Program.

Questions:
1. If I get a retailer that will send a system restore disk with Leopard, Apple has some hardware checks to not allow me to install it on the MB, right?
2. The up to date program, what exactly does that send out, will it send out a "full/retail" version, or a "restore" version of the software?

Thanks for the help.

no kidding. With all the can-i-pirate-leopard threads in the past couple of weeks, you'd think this guy would be more subtle.

I think they're pretty simple questions....Does the Restore disk allow it to be installed on the MB - yes or no? Does it do a hardware check?

And what do they send in the up to date program? Simple question....

How many people here have multiple Macs and are actually buying multiple copies of Leopard? I don't know too many of them who are, if they have multiple macs, they're buying one copy and using it on others.

I'm not opposed to buying a full version, if the restore disk won't put it on a MacBook, I kind of have to don't I? I'm just trying to save $129.

Jeez. Not like I'm trying to run copies and give it to all my friends.....

1. I think the restore disk only works on specific model, but someone here said it could be "fixed"
2. the up-to-date program will probably send you a full retail version

FWIW my up-to-date disk a while ago worked on any machine running the previous version of the OS.

Bought a Mac Mini with 10.3, got the 10.4 up-to-date disk, then installed that on my Powerbook instead.

What you're asking about is improperly taking advantage of a single low-cost upgrade by installing it on multiple Macs. If that's what you want to do, that's your choice, but don't come on here asking moronic questions about it. Get a clue.

New Macbook Pro's out today. I'm assuming they come with Leopard pre-installed, and the installer disk with them is probably keyed for just the Macbook Pro.

The problem is that the rules of MacNN expressly prohibit people from asking about how to pirate software or from asking for support from others with pirating software. You have made it clear that you intend to try to use a disk with a limited license restricted to one computer and try to install it on more than one. The fact that you're only doing it yourself is immaterial. It's still a lost sale for Apple and it is stealing.

This is why we're not giving you straight answers. MacNN could get in trouble if a hard line stance is not taken.

I bought the family pack version of Leopard. $199 for up to five Macs. That breaks down to: $129 for one copy (single license), $98 each for two copies, $66 each for three copies, $50 each for 4 copies, or $40 each for five copies. The disk is one copy, with a license that allows installation on up to five computers in the same household. Many others have bought this.

Do whatever you are going to do, but don't come in here and tell us about it.

I will say this, though. I bought a refurbished Power Mac G5 shortly after Panther came out. The computer had Jaguar on it, and they gave me a Panther Restore disk for the G5. It would not install on other computers. Take that information as you will.
