I note you have both the ATI Radeon X1900 and the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT. Which card does it appear on, and does it still appear if you switch to the other card?

In this case i am using ATI Radeon X1900 and have tried both plugs and same lines occur or text blurs.
When i connect to the NVIDIA the screen magnifies its self and can only see roughly 10 lines of text and nothing else.

Could the problem be the ATI video card?

Are the lines static or do they move? Have you verified it's not your monitor? It could be a thermal problem (lack of cooling) with the card.

Sounds like the all-too-common X1900 overheating issue.

The last two generations of ATi cards have been real stinkers.

DAMNNNN
if i were to take this card with the box and no receipt would they accept it?
i know i bought this card in December last year

I do not do extreme gaming or anything like that. the problem has started since i upgraded to Leopard.
if i were to get this card fixed would i need additional cooling? (liquid, fan)??
if so could you post a link of an example or suggested one..

thanks

You can have 2 lines of text. If you have a pic, only one line, like my sig.

I have the same problem and so do many other people...if you search for 'artifacts' on discussions.apple.com a lot of people are complaining about it. For me I find switching to thousands of colors, then switching right back to millions of colors makes it go away for a few hours.

I think it's a driver issue, as I didn't have this problem in Tiger.

So all i can do right now is wait till a new driver comes out?

ANOTHER thing i noticed was that my fans are spinning half their normal rate.. uh oh
does anyone else have that too?

Mine were around 500rpm
i downloaded SMCfancontrol just to make sure nothing overheats now they are running at 1k

I've got a new X1900 coming from apple.. mine is not only doing this, but its also causing the entire system to freeze up often, especially when using graphics apps.

Getting back on topic, yeah mkerr, I'm waiting for a new driver. There is some sort of hack that G5 owners have found and posted on xlr8yourmac, where they copy a file from their Tiger installation. I don't know if that works on Intel Macs though, and I didn't have that file on my Tiger backup, so who knows.

I have a Core Duo iMac with the X1600, and I had a weird line down the very left side of my screen the day after installing leopard. I switched backgrounds and it went away. It will be updated soon I'm sure.

I have the same problem with both: NVIDIA and ATI cards on my MacPro. I also get screen freezes. I run Two 21 inch monitors rotated 90 degrees.
Following is the best solution I found for these display problems with Leopard upgrade. It makes things better although not perfect.

1) Reset the PRAM - Disconnect both CPU and Monitors from everything. Hold Power buttons 20 sec. (both CPU and monitors) - then connect CPU restart while holding Option-Apple-P-R wait for second chime. Then reconnect all peripherals and monitors.

2) Download and SMCfancontrol and cool your CPU to under 30 degrees celsius.

This should work until there is a firmware update that will hopefully solve the issues.

Good Luck!

I'm having the same artificating issue here on an iMac Core Duo 2 (Late 2006 model). At first I thought it was the actual screen that was dying, but it appears to be software related. I never had the issue under OS X 10.4. I only started seeing it after the upgrade to OS X 10.5.2, I believe.

Either way, Expose doesn't rectify it for me. Usually the only way to get rid of the lines is to kill the application that they are affecting.

It's become pretty damn annoying.

Old thread...I ended up fixing this with SMCFanControl just by boosting the PCIe fan. But then I got the HD 2600 card for my Mac Pro, and now I don't have to use it anymore.

So I believe it was simply a hardware issue and Leopard stresses it more, or for some reason the Leopard driver for those ATI cards puts too much stress on the card and causes it to overheat.
