I don't know how I turned it on but it's starting to bug me to no end. I'm noticing this in adium. Whenever the window is out of focus and I receive a message, someone reads it out. When someone connects it says connected. Haven't noticed it in any other program. However I turned adium's volume to zero but still have the problem. I even tried uninstalling/installing it and even upgrading to the latest beta.

I think it is a OS X setting that I've changed but can't get back. MSN messenger and Fire messenger don't seem to have this problem. I also checked accessibility settings and "voice over" is off.

help will be appreciated.

There is a setting for this in Adium somewhere, I think. Try turning it off and back on again and see if that helps.

Nope I tried all settings. Made another account and it's working fine on that so far.

Today I installed a new application and it said "registered." Only then did I realize I had set notification to "speech" in Growl. Thanks to everyone that contributed.
