okay, I'm not really a noob. I've been using macs for half a decade, but I've been the type of user who never dug into the system to figure out how it's all put together. OS X "just works" for me.

I'm upgrading to Leopard from 10.3.9 & I'm intending to do a complete reformat on my system drive. What is the recommended approach to backing up all my critical data so I can easily bring it back into OS X after the upgrade?

Thanks much...

Grab it all and toss it on an external drive. If you want it bootable, try out SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner (Google 'em)

Why are you doing this rather than a straight upgrade? If you have no current issues, I don't think there are any advantages to what you are proposing.

adam - I can grab the entire disk & dupe it, then re-import what I need? It's not as simple as copy/paste, is it?

peeb - b/c I want to. my system is lagging a bit (dual G5, 2gb ram) & a clean slate sounds good.

thanks guys...

No, what adam told you to do is not necessary pruettsk. I recommend doing an Archive and Install.

An archive and install would be a good option, although frankly, if you are not having any problems, I don't know why you would not just upgrade.

There could be cruft built up from Panther that you wouldn't want in Leopard. Plus, someone else did a straight upgrade from Tiger and had problems so I suggest Archive and Install.

But if he WANTS to do a full reinstall like he SAYS he does, then, yes you can just copy paste your entire hard disk over to your external drive, once it is copied, then you can pick and choose what to bring back over.

Oh, sorry. In that case, I recommend migration assistant.

great, thanks again.

10.3 doesn't have migration assistant, but i assume leopard has that all built-in that i can run once installed? i'll mess w/ this stuff later today.

best,
scott
