For some reason whenever I type either 127.0.0.1 or localhost in a web browser, I am unable to view my local web server. Error stating that the browser could not open the server localhost.

Does anyone have tips on getting this working?

Apache is running.

The hosts file looks like this:
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost

probly a dumb question but - is apache really running? The sharing control panel could be wrong.

in the terminal:
ps ax | grep httpd

the error log will help debug
sudo tail /var/log/apache2/error_log

is your local firewall on?

maybe your network is down.

Leopard disallows the localhost. That's a real problem for those of us who use ssh tunnels. Fortunately, the following command in terminal drops that check.

defaults write com.apple.ScreenSharing skipLocalAddressCheck -boolean YES
