I'm trying to figure out a way to back my hard drive up on my external drive without already deleting what is on the external. The programs I have found such as SuperDuper and Silverlining both wipe the destination hard drive. Can I partition the external hard drive without erasing what is already on it? Is there some other way to do this?

Slverlining doesnt wipe the destination drive... on my macbook it simply duplicates files contained in "Richard" to a folder on my external called "Richard".. all other data itunes library etc remains untouched!

CarbonCopyCloner works. You can backup your entire drive and make it a nice neat disk image which you can save on any drive. No need to wipe.

That is, unless you wanted your backup to be bootable or something.

Do I need to make the backup bootable in case the leopard installation fails? Also, assuming everything with the installation goes fine, do I lose apps?

Also my external is USB, I don't think CCC works with USB :/
