How do you make the dock icons stop bouncing?

It bugs me to no end to have those icons bounce when the application thinks it has something to tell you. I really don't care that Firefox finished downloading, for example. I'm trying to work on other things and that ridiculous bounce drives me nuts. I have to click over to the app just to make it quit so I can go back to what I was doing.
