repair permissions not completing

As title,

On my PB running leopard lastest update.
I ran repair permissions because suddenly there is no sound and the volume controls are not working.
There was sound last night. I've not altered the system since then.

Decided to restart but get a message saying I could make the disk unusable if I quite repair permissions before it finishes. It looks like it is not doing anything and has been running for around 20 minutes. Any ideas?

‘Close’ means ‘Quit’, I suppose? They really could have worded that better.

I am guessing so as I clicked on 'don't close' and the app didn't quit.

ALSO at first I thought perhaps that disk utility was just taking some time but there is something wrong as it's been over half an hour now. I need some help.

IT COMPLETED!!!

Took 35 minutes. BUt there is still no Sound!!
