I have a shared external HD, "shared" only by myself because I have a MacBook I'd rather keep mobile.... Why won't Time Machine recognize it as my backup drive? That's a rhetorical question, really... I know it won't.... At least I think it won't, unless I'm doing something wrong. But, in any case, when will Apple create that functionality to allow for a drive on your wireless network to be used as your Time Machine backup drive? Is there some good reason for not doing so that I'm not experienced enough to know of intuitively? The drive I have as a shared drive through my AirPort is the one I use for my backups, but I have to connect it to my USB to update it. I see that Time Machine does the virtual backup thing in the background when the drive is not physically connected to my laptop... but what gives? Why not have the program use the wireless network?

Just a thought...

Mahalo!

Time Machine doesn't officially support backing up to an AirDisk. It was supposed to, but the feature was pulled at the last minute. Some speculation thinks it has to do with the unreliability of AirDisk with the latest Airport Extreme firrmware. It may also have to do with conflicting drive format requirements (APM vs GUID, journaled vs not).
