Do I need to keep old .pkg files on the system? Is it necessary or can I delete them?

General Mac questions go here: http://forums.macnn.com/mac-os-x/

If you've installed them, you can delete them.

If you've found them looking through your system (say, in a folder called "Receipts"), don't touch them.

You won't break anything per se.

But the system uses package receipts (which are NOT packages - merely logs of what a certain package installed, and where) to determine proper user permissions when checking and repairing file permissions on your disk, so you *might* prevent the system from being able to *fix* something, should it go wrong.

If you, say, downloaded a package and installed it, then no you can throw it away. But I wouldn't get rid of .pkg's that were there before.
Signature depreciated.
