Turn on Remote Management and configure your home router appropriately.

No, it's all free.

If you'll be connectting with a Leopard Mac you can use /System/Library/CoreServices/ScreenSharing. If you're on Tiger CotVNC will help.

Just make sure the appropriate ports (5900 for VNC) are open on your router. Or tunnel through ssh,

You can user screensharing (which will allow you to connect via VNC from anywhere) after setting up proper port forwarding on your router.

There's also a service called logmein (www.logmein.com) which works a lot like Back to my Mac, but without the $99/year .Mac subscription.

just theorizing -- never done this myself -- but setting up VPN on your router, then logging in remotely, should also give you access as if you were right there on the LAN.

Though not the fastest site for controlling a computer at home, I do use this site for when I'm at work, or not in the city for when I need to tap into my home desktop. Not greatest in speed, but free and can get the job done.
