I have a Linux based NAS (Buffalo Technologies Link Station). When I try to back up my Mac to it with Lacie, the job fails because OSX has allowed some filenames that are incompatible with Linux. Is there a way to have OSX use only filenames that Linux accepts?

There's nothing inherent in Linux that would cause it to reject a legal BSD filename as far as I know. What filesystem is being used on the NAS, and what are the filenames it's rejecting?

I tried another backup a few minutes ago. I misread the reason for failure. Instead of an illegal name, it just gave an error code of 37, meaning it couldn't copy the file (but doesn't indicate why).

Error -37 does mean a bad file name, but it's hard to tell what's wrong with the filename without further details. A quick Google search indicates that old versions of AppleShare wouldn't allow filenames longer than 31 characters, which would turn up an error -37.
