I've just updated my macbook pro (issues, issues with the process) to leopard by archiving and installing.
Now, there's a folder called Previous systems, where I think my files were archived. Since I'm all updated now, can I erase that file?

Yep. It doesn't do anything except hold your old system stuff in case you decide you want something back.

Something, as in a special system installation that most people never installed and don't have to worry about. If you're missing some system functionality that you previously had, you're better off finding the latest version of that software and ensuring its compatibility with Leopard.

Before you toss it, run all of your programs, make sure everything runs right. Some apps (Photoshop and Quark) put files in the root level Library. Those files won't get transfered in an Archive and Install. Just be sure before you trash it!

Thank you.

Could I just use Time Machine to back it up, then erase it? This way, don't I theoretically keep the file on my external hard drive with Time Machine (sorry, brand new to Leopard)?

I won't bother with TimeMachine backing that up, you will never need it again!
