When I downloaded programs e.g. Stuffit 12, or the driver for my printer, I can only save them to the desktop. Is there a way to save them in Applications or another folder? Thank you.

The printer driver you should probably install (double-click the installer or package icon and follow the instructions). After that you can eject the disk image (white hard disk icon) and trash the image file (document icon with white hard disk icon on it).

Applications you can simply drag out of the disk image into the Applications folder. Then eject the disk image and trash the image file.

Each program has its own settings for download locations, for example, Safari -> Preferences -> General. You might want to think about it, though, not all downloads are ready to work applications. Many have installers that need to be run to extract the program itself. I find it easier to drop them on the Desktop, run the installer then delete the download.
