Since the back up created by time machine holds redundant files over time, does that mean the size of the drive (or partition) used needs to be larger than the start up drive? If so, how much larger would be recommended? Thanks in advance...Peter

No, the drive has to be at least as large the amount of data you want to back up plus X. You should use a separate harddrive for your backups, though.

Hi- Yes, it will be a separate drive, a partition on a 750GB seagate I'm adding. My question is whether the partition can be the same size as the original for use as a time machine back up or does it have to be bigger to store older versions of files? thanks...Peter

If it's the same size as the volume you are backing up and that volume is becoming full, Time Machine obviously can not keep old revisions of files. I would suggest to have a Time Machine volume that is at least 50% larger than the volume you are backing up.

That, or have Time Machine set to NOT backup the /Library or /System folders to save space.
