I can't find any helpful info on the apple support site about this.

Time Machine takes ages to prepare for back up and then error with -

Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume.

I have run disk utility and manually copied thousands of files to the drive and all works well including restore. I can't back anything up now.

Any suggestions?

Is there room on the drive? Do you use the drive to store items other than Backups? If not, wipe the drive and start over. Did you mess with the Backups folder on the drive?

How did it come to this? Goodbye PowerPC. | sensory output

There is 83Gb left and there is nothing else on the drive. Not messed with the folder at all. Not really much use as a back up if I need to wipe it and restart.

Is there a way to see an error log, this may give me an idea what is going wrong?

Run a repair disk on both your internal HD and your backup drive.
