I have done a search on this issue and cannot find anything. On my MBP, sometimes when after running for a while, applications seem to hide. In Macmail, for example, I see the menu for it on top, but the window is gone. When I restart, the window reappears. It has happened to word as well. I am not using spaces FWIW. Any ideas?

Turning Spaces on and off just to check whether a bug maybe is causing this behaviour can't harm.

If I remember correctly the last person with that problem had those application windows somehow moved to the (turned off) second monitor. So check your monitor preferences as well. Maybe turn mirroring on and off to see whether that collects all windows on the main screen again.

What happens if you try to create a new window?

Are you sure you didn't close the window?

I know many PC-> Mac converts that run into this. On windows, when you close the last window, the program exits. On Macs everything is 'document' based. So even though you may have closed all the document windows (or even main window in mail) the program is still open.

Next time it happens try pressing Command-1 (iirc, that's the Main window button)

I have been a mac user since the days of the Mac LC. Still, just on occasion, I get befuttled. Rattled. Confused, and frankly it does not help that I am also stupid. I was able to bring it all back when I turned on spaces. When the application was running, sometimes the window would disappear though the menu was still visible. I would try to open a new window, and nothing. I would try to quit the application, restart it and still only see the menu but no window. Odd, and it only happens on my MBP, but NOT on my MB or iMac.
My LC does not seem to be affected either.
