Greeting all - new Mac user here. Been totally happy for the past month but just today something strange (for me!) has happened. Hoping its an easy fix.

All of a sudden I cant open any of the folders on my desk top or using Finder - Go - I cant go to any of my folders like Home , Applications etc.

I click it and usually nothing happens.....sometime all the icons on my desk top disappear for a second then come back.

I have a new iMac 2.4 24 inch with 3 gb of ram. Running Leopard.

Any suggestions?????

Also I just installed Little Snitch and the problem seems to have started after that. I want to uninstall it but I cant open my Applications folder. Is there another way I can get to that Application to trash it?
Sorry, after using Windows for 10 years Im a little lost here!

Ok - got Little Snitch uninstalled but hasnt helped. If I click on the Macintosh HD icon on the desk top I get the spinning beach ball for a few seconds then all the desk top icons disappear then Im back to where I started.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh frustrated.

Normally I would say that you could open a Terminal window (from /Applications/Utilities) and use an rm command, but I guess you can't do that. Try rebooting and hold the shift key down the entire time. after you enter you login password, hold the shift key and click to OK button with the mouse. This will prevent unnecessary programs from starting.

Try to reboot in single user mode, by holding down the command and s keys at start up. At the end of the lines of text, you will have the opportunity to run the fsck process as per on screen instructions. Do that and repeat until you get the message everything looks OK, then follow instructions to restart.

Thanks for the replies. Tried both of those options......first one - When the computer waas restarting I got to the white screen with the grey Apple mark and the little icon was spinning around (not the beach ball but the little stick figure circle) and nothing else would happen. Just kept spinning then after a few minutes I has to just hold in the start button to rrestart again.

Second option - Dont really understand all of that but I held down command and s and when it started I got a black screen with white writing (looked like dos style) and I typed fsck at the end of the writing and pressed enter but nothing happened. No instructions to follow so had to hold down the start button again.

Computer is starting slower now than it did two days ago.
Everything else is working fine - internet, running itunes/iphoto/Photoshop etc - anything from the dock fires up and runs fine.
Just can open the desktop folders or go Home/Applications etc.

You were asking about deleting something, so he brought up rm - the Unix delete command. It sounds like there's something wrong with your drive, but the OS could also be damaged. I suggest doing an "Archive and Install" reinstall of OS X.
