Yes, for most applications that will work. You don't have to drag anything to the desktop, however. You can insert a blank DVD, open it in the finder, drag what you want to copy into it and then click the Burn button.

I'd use disk utility to make an image of the original disk and then burn it.
this is what i did since i was trying to make yet another copy of leopard.
here is the crazy thing that has occurred: my macbook pro does not recognize sony DVD+R DL's, but my IMac and mac mini do. however, the imac and mac mini do not recognize Nexxtech DVD+R DL's but my macbook does.
