Uh oh... here we go again.

Do a search in this forum. There was a long long discussion on this already.

Thanks, found it. I have a problem with this behavior in *nix! At least "rm -fr" should work.

Steve, please transfer those Marketing people from Redmond off the OS X team!

The Downloads folder is now -- like the Library -- necessary for the operation and inner workings of OS X. Hence it cannot be deleted. Even if you manage to manually delete it, it will either be recreated or interrupt some functions of OS X.

Just leave it in place, hide it, if you must.

I'd say the only lame thing here is your completely unhelpful thread title.

Edit: The title was "Lame!" before OreoCookie changed it.

Seems about as helpful as it could get.
I'm on MacNN forums, but no longer have a Mac...

It's a good title. It points out the problem-that the user does not understand that this is a required part of Leopard. Leopard created it, Leopard uses it, Leopard requires it. Messing with it is probably about as unpleasant as renaming your user folder. Don't do it.

I took OC's advice just ignore the folder. The thing that griped me is I didn't think it rose to the occasion of breaking away from standard *nix commands, although it seems to be an overall plus to safeguard other folders like Library. Thanks all for the tips and sorry about the original unhelpful title.

Is there a reason you do not want the Downloads folder?
I'm just curious, because since I started using Mac OS X I've manually created a Downloads folder for myself, and, apparently I'm the opposite to you, and really like that 10.5 doesn't put files on my Desktop by default.

As I guess you have found out thru searching by now...

chmod -a "everyone deny delete" ~/Downloads

...would be the first step necessary, to allow other ways to work.
ACLs are so prevalent nowadays, it is as if they were "standard".

I think the only program that we can't prevent from using '~/Downloads'
is Software Update (which only uses it for "non-install" downloads... or?).
Anyway, all others -- such as web browsers -- are easily redirected.
