I'm planning on upgrading to 10.5 on my Macbook Pro, but I want to do a clean install. I've got so much garbage hiding around I want to get rid of it all and start fresh. Basically I've got a backup of my photos, videos, music and financial information on my external HD that was performed using a trial version of Memeo Autobackup. I do not want to purchase Memeo Autobackup because going forward I plan on using TimeMachine. It appears that Memeo Autobackup just placed the files in a directory on the external HD and that it is not encrypted in anyway. I lost the system disk that my Macbook Pro came with out of my backpack on I-90 somewhere between Hardin, Montana and Sheridan, Wyoming. So where this puts me is I'm going to buy 10.5 and iLife '08 at the same time. Using 10.5's disk I plan to erase then install the OS followed by iLife 08. I'm fearful that even though my data is backed up on my external drive, that I will not be able to recover these files after upgrading to 10.5 and iLife '08. Everything, except for my financial documents, is coming from iLife 06. Are my concerns valid? Any pitfalls I should be aware of? Thanks for your help in advance.

Do another backup if you're concerned. Use Disk Utility to make an image of your drive, then you know it's compatible and all your data is saved.

If you've backup already rest assured that all your data will be compatible.
My niece installed Leopard form Panther & all want O.K. I'm not sure about iMovies she made but she saved those to DVD anyway.
I move to Leopard from Tiger and I did a clean install all my data I saved to a Folder & using Disk Utility
saved it has .DMG. Other stuff (personal data & settings) I used Backup to .Mac but in the end since I remembered all passwords & usernames to sites etc, I didn't use or restore keychains, address book, calendar, but for sticky notes, iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, GarageBand & Safari bookmarks all other files was simple drag & drop! Even to test which app's worked or not.
I, Me, Myself & i'm still alone!

I am skeptical that you need to reinstall unless you have some specific problem.

If you're just looking to upgrade, go the Archive-Install route. It's a fast and stable alternative to erase-install.

I've experienced no problems whatsoever upgrading from iLife 06 to iLife 08, so I believe everything should be compatible in that area. As for your backup worries, if you're that concerned that your data won't be recoverable, there's nothing wrong with doing a manual backup just to be on the safe side.
