If I let my MacBook go into Sleep mode with an external USB hard drive connected, I get a warning that the drive was improperly disconnected when the MacBook wakes up.
I would like to know if there is a script or an Automator solution that would unmount the external drive(s) after a set amount of inactivity; for example, I want to set the Power Saving to go into Sleep mode after one hour and fifteen minutes. Can entry into Sleep mode be used to trigger an external drive unmount?
I would expect that OS X would unmount external drives automatically before going into Sleep mode, but this does not appear to be the case.

Kind of on topic: my wife's macbook doesn't do this. It keeps her USB 2.0 bus-powered drive mounted if she closes her macbook to put it to sleep, and it won't give her any errors when woken back up. She's running the same hardware as you, with the same OS X version, except hers is a 2GHz CD CPU w/ 1 GB RAM.
Does your iMac have the same behavior as your MacBook? (Although they are different OS versions.) Do you have another Intel Leopard Mac that also gives you this issue?

My iMac doesn't dismount USB volumes when it sleeps, but they are not "improperly removed" either. They are just there (even when connected to a powered hub), and are rescanned when the computer wakes up. I'm wondering if your particular USB drive is what's causing this rather than your Mac. What drive do you have connected?

I just tried it and got the "improper device removal" error.
To clarify my setup: the drive is a Seagate 160 GB drive in a Mad Dog Multimedia (I think a CompUSA brand) USB 2.0 enclosure with a separate power supply. The drive is set up as my Time Machine drive.
If I have the drive plugged into a USB hub, the MacBook will sleep and wake as expected; if plugged into the MacBook USB ports directly, the MacBook will sleep and then immediately awaken with the error.
I can't try it on the iMac at the moment as it is in a box, packed for an imminent move.
I could try a drive in a different enclosure; I have an Adaptec enclosure, but would have to use a different drive, as the Seagate drive is a SATA drive and the Adaptec enclosure is IDE only. Perhaps I'll try that later today.
