Hi,

I'm running 10.4.11 on a powerpc dual 1.8 G5. Lately I've come across a weird display/spacing problem in mail, widgets and safari. I tried to search for it but couldn't find reasonable search terms. Here are some screens:

Mail seems the most messed up. Notice the odd circles and spacing in the email.

A sample widget:

A lot of CSS sites are displayed with horrible spacing in safari, shot is a comparison with ff:

Other than those it seems like I really don't have the same problem with any other programs/apps. How can I fix this? it's such an eyesore.

Very weird.

Did it coincide with any software updates/installs or hardware changes?

I can't remember, since it started 1-2 months ago. I really don't think so.

edit: To elaborate some more the last big install I did was Adobe CS3. Have been doing regular updates as well. But nothing out of the blue.

10.4.11 was released almost a couple months ago. If you think it started around then, I'd recommend downloading the full .11 updater (not the one software update might have provided) and reinstall it. Available here: Apple - Support - Downloads - Mac OS X 10.4.11 Update (PPC)

The OS X and Apple related apps are all based on Cocoa aren't they? How are programs like iMovie? Sounds like it could be web rendering in Apple apps that are broken, although the side of Mail should be ok.

Cold Warrior linked you to the standard 10.4.11 update. Try the combo update Apple - Support - Downloads - Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (PPC)
This includes all of the updates from I think 10.4.0, someone correct me if I'm wrong though.

Another thing to try: create a new user. Use those apps as that user & see if the problems persist. If it does, the problems are system-wide, not confined to your current user account.

[edit] Just saw seanc's post. I failed you by not checking that I was linking to the combo update. It's what I meant, as the combo updater's are good problem-solvers, not their errant cousins spawned from Software Update or the Delta downloads.

No problem.

Ok so I created a new user and logged in as that user.... Everything was normal. Switched back to my admin account and now everything is fixed

Not going to complain. I'm guessing the problem may pop up again

Glad it worked out (for now... )

Don't hesitate to post back if the problem returns.
