I have sold my current iMac to move up to a new aluminum iMac.

Most likely, however, I will have to ship out my old iMac before getting the new one, so I need to have a plan in place to restore from my external hard drive.

My question: Does the "Restore from Time Machine" feature work only with the computer Time Machine is configured with, or could I restore my old computer to my aluminum one from Time Machine just fine?

If the version of OS X of your Time Machine backup is supported by the Mac you're buying, then yes.

So, 10.5.1 is my backups, and 10.5.0 would be what is on the iMac. Should I first upgrade to 10.5.1?

Not necessary. The Time Machine restore will replace what's already there.

Wait... so should I even bother installing Leopard? It will come with Tiger, so I can just pop in the Leopard CD and say "Restore from backup," and then BAM 10.5.1 on my computer?

Neato.

Exactly. Why will it have Tiger on it? Not getting a new one?

yep...works well too. I had my MBP replaced by apple and instead of using the leopard install that was preinstalled (10.5) I restored from my TM backup (10.5.1) that was from my old MBP
