Hi, I get this file showing up in trash after every delete, and it won't go away until I try to view info on it, then it's gone. Acts like a pc virus, how could that be? Thanks! Ps. Icemachine won't even delete it, the only way to remove it from trash is to try and view info on it. The first real problem I have had with Leopard 10.5...

If you click it and select "Show original" from the Finder's File menu, where does it link to?

Try "Repair Disk" in Disk Utility (don't do "Repair Permissions"!)

Why does "everyone" (on many platforms) go screaming "ZOMGVIRUS" when something weird happens? Corruption happens everywhere.

If you lived in nepal, you would know why. Not that I ever scream about it, this is a pretty calm place most of the time, but I would guess that 99% of the pc population here that shares files with anyone else has or has had multiple infections. I used to have an all PC shop and went mac just for that reason. We spent a large percentage of our maintenance time restoring infected machines from backup images. It was a nightmare that I had never seen the likes of in the west. I guess disease in undeveloped parts of the world also extends into cyberspace.

Anal & Tent, thanks for that but I am not sure how to get into the trash from finder, I only know right mouse on icon, and then open. From there, there is no Show Original there, just get info and others of no use. Get info immediately "deletes" the file. Permissions are fine according to Leopard install disk. It looks like an alias to something that went south, and is corruption of some type for sure, but what would cause it to come back all the time?

forumhound, your point about PCs and viruses is well taken. But note that you're using a Mac. There are no viruses (or worms or trojans) that can autonomously impact a Mac in the wild. I'm not in denial-I'm a computer security professional. Mac OS is HARD to write a PC-type virus for, and its structure is so different from that of Windows that even if you could write a virus, it would be pretty obvious that it was trying to infect a Mac. It's pretty hard to install anything without user cooperation.
Besides, viruses hide their working and their messes; a goofy named file like that sure isn't hidden! It's also being reported as being of zero length, so it's only a directory entry. As mduell says, it's just a bit of corruption.
Finally, TETENAL didn't say "repair permissions," he said "repair DISK." Disk Utility can fix a lot of things, including randomly appearing, zero length files that don't really exist. Give it a shot.

How did I know some anti-PC troll would show up...
I see the same thing from long time Mac users and Windows users; a strange thing happens and immediately they scream "VIRUSKLSDHFKJSGFKDSJ!!!11one!!1!" I guess it's just ignorance on both platforms.

okay, I will never utter that word again as long as I own macs...promise. But permissions/disk repair did not fix this "corruption" - I remember seeing a lot of behavior on PCs with .exe files not going away after deletion, something about root kit problems...I didn't say Viru...uh....
It would be nice to fix this without having to go to the clone and do a restore...
thanks!
note: an interesting aspect of this particular mbp, ever since owning back when it was delivered with 10.4.x, it has had a problem with clearing the trash. That was the main reason that I downloaded icemachine. It's the only reason that I ever used it, to clear a sticky trash bin. Wonder if that may have something to do with this...

Actually, 95% of the time, when a Windows user says that, they're right (maybe not that the virus is causing the problem, but they do have a virus). I know — I'm the one they always ask to clean things up.

I know Chuck, it's true. I''m traumatized. Even thought our shop is now all mac, we may be the only all mac shop in the country. And the boys are using bootcamp/parallels. I told them it's a gamble, even though I put nod32 on every install. but apparently there are apps, and i expect games, that don't exist in ub, so they say they must. as the admin, i can't sleep at night (but mostly because those are non-loadshed hours in my hood.

I see several files and folders like this on my Mac as well. If I go to my User>Preferences folder there are two EMPTY folders at the top right now named:
¯Î∞ê÷òøˇfiĆ~a|êÿÃè¿o (øˇfi‡ß§#0 and ¯Î∞ê÷òøˇfiĆ~a|êÿÃè¿o (øˇfi‡ß§#0
I don't know where they came from but if I delete them and go back there a couple days from now there will be a couple more with different but similar names. I'm using Mac OS 10.4.11, but I have seen this behavior in 10.3.x as well. There is no way to tell what app is creating these things. And why they would be in the Prefs folder is beyond me. Anyone know?

i decided to ignore this problem as disk checking and whatnot did nothing to help, and then it just went away...
