I used Spotlight to locate old mail messages containing certain password strings (largely for forum registrations), but one still turns up. The strange thing is that as far as I can tell, this message doesn't exist, or at the very least, it certainly doesn't exist on my account, since Spotlight situates it as being on "Computer." But selecting it and hitting command-return to reveal it does nothing. I've tried searches in FileBuddy looking for files ending in ".emlx" containing the string, but they didn't find it. I've even rebuilt my entire Spotlight index to no avail. Finally, if I drag the item from the Spotlight window to a Terminal window, the cursor simply moves over one space, so I can't perform any operation on it! I run Disk First Aid and DiskWarrior regularly, and they don't find anything wrong with my disk directory.
Any ideas?

What's the string -- if it's not clearly something private? I'll do a search and see if it pops up on my computer.

Try [deleted] (without the quotes) -- but remember that it appears in a Mail message in Spotlight.

Try rebuilding your mailboxes. I found this article - TUAW - Rebuilding Mail's database
You didn't mention what Mail version you have, but the article is from early 2006.

Done that. I'm using the version of Mail included with 10.4.11. Note that the Spotlight search turns up a message for my Computer not for my particular account

If you go to the Finder and press command-F, it brings up a search window. If you search for the file here and single-click its name, it should display path information at the bottom of the window. If you can see its path, you should be able to add that folder to Spotlight's privacy options, and maybe it won't show up anymore.

Turns out that DiskWarrior 4 found that extra directory space could be recovered; when I recovered, Spotlight no longer found the file.
