Hi,
I currently am running panther 10.3.9 and am try to install Tiger 10.4 on my G4 Powerbook. It won't let me install...when i hit install it prompts to hit restart install and after it restarts it just goes back to the same place. My superdrive is broken so I am using an external CD/DVD drive. Could this be an issue. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!

If you're using a USB drive - forget it. The PowerPC machines built after 1998 can not boot from a USB device (the Intel machines can).

If your external drive is connected via Firewire: Boot the machine and hold down the option (alt) key. That will show all bootable volumes.

I think some G4s can boot from USB, but only at 1.0 speed.

I'm quite certain only the very first iMacs and G3 smurfMac towers were capable of booting from USB.

Just the first few G3 iMacs and Smurf hotels could boot from a USB device. It was miserably slow. None of the G4s or G5s could. All the Intels can and with USBv2 the boot speed is "reasonable" but certainly not for regular use.

Thanks, it is USB...I have a firewire external CD/DVD drive at work that I'll bring home and try to install from that. I'll let you know if it works.

Thanks VERY much for the advice!! ))

Then all these people must be lying or joking:

macosxhints.com - Easily boot from USB 2.0 drives on PowerPC Macs
