I saw the option to share my cd/dvd drive in the sharing preferences but I can't seem to figure out how to make it work. There doesn't seem to be any documentation on how to do it.

My guess is that only a MacBook Air can make use of it. However, you've always been able to share optical discs via File Sharing.

Is this part of v10.5.2 or has it always been there?

what i have done is select the users computer on the left side of the finder window, connect as the user of the computer that has the dvd or cd and once you log on it will show up as a networked volume.

The remote disc feature that comes as a separate installer for other Macs (and PCs) with the MBA has been incorporated into 10.5.2

It specifically says MacBook Air so I doubt it. Also, it would require a firmware update on non-MBA Macs to support it.
