Spotlight has been disabled somehow. A search yields no results. Rebuilding the index does not work, including using MainMenu to rebuild and reindex Spotlight. I have tried all "fixes" suggested, including resetting display resolution, rebuilding Fonts, deleting Spotlight prefs and plist, and some suggested command in Terminal. When I use MainMenu to rebuild spotlight index, this is what comes up within 10 seconds:

/:
Indexing and searching disabled.

Spotlight index has been deleted.

In a few moments, the Spotlight menu item, located at the top right hand corner of your display, will automatically start indexing the contents of your computer.

Rebuild Spotlight index complete

However, the index is not rebuilt and searching has been disabled. Any idea how to re-enable spotlight on my main user? Spotlight works on a guest account, but not my main account.

Thanks

Try Spotless

I'd have Spotless delete the index file and start from scratch.

Hey Turtle, thanks for the tip. I downloaded Spotless, tried it, and it worked! Nothing else did the job. I for sure will pay the shareware fee. Great little app. I was about to try something desperate to get spotlight back up.

Thanks again!

In desperation I tried Spotless. The great simple app explained to me that my index files where on a path in the spotlight-integrity-list in system prefs. Someone has put my entire drive in there for fun.
