Does anyone out there know of a workaround that will allow 256 color support in Leopard? It still shows up as a color option in the display panel of system preferences, but apparently isn't selectable.

I don't actually want to use the OS in 256 color mode, but I have an X-application that works best when it opens widows with 8-bit color depth. All that was needed was for me to tell X to open in 256 color mode.

My program worked fine under Tiger using this scheme, but now, because Leopard has ended 8-bit color support, all I get are white screens when I open an x-window. This is frustrating, because I know the hardware has no trouble with this.

Any ideas about how to get around this?

You could give DisplayConfig X or SwitchRes X a try, see if it'll force it into 256 color mode.

I don't know if they work in Leopard, though. Neither one appears to have been updated.
