I just (naively) tried to copy my MBP's just-created "Previous Systems" folder to an external drive. No go-"one or more files in Previous Systems is not readable by you". Can I make an image of this folder using Disk Utility? Will everything be included in it? Obviously there's a lot of stuff in there that is sensitive, and I'm glad that it's well protected, but how can I back it up?

A disk image will do the trick. But there really isn't much if anything worth backing up.

I think you can use a tool like Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to backup such folders/files ...

Uhm, it's not well protected at all. Anyone with admin rights can access the files, and (su)do anything to them.

If you've already made sure you retrieved all your personal files and any necessary application support files, it's a waste of space. The only reason Apple preserves the previous system is to give you a chance to verify that the A&I didn't miss something. Once you've done that, toss it.

Turtle, you obviously can get at any file you want. But there are files in the System folder that are marked so that I can't even read them, and you apparently have to change their attributes one-by-one... And the only reason I wanted to back it up was in case something came up down the road. Art, you're saying that all I have to do is make sure my apps work and my user data is available? That's a project to work on-should be pretty quick too. And it means I can recover the space the Previous Systems folder on my iMac is hogging too... Not that I'm hurting, but it's good to know.

Yeah, if everything works and all your files are accounted for, toss it. It's not something you can go back and boot from.

Great. I think there's one app I haven't played with yet, so I'll check it out and probably get rid of the baggage.
Thanks all!
