Leopard Server now has a certificate manager in the Server Admin app. But it's not terribly clear how it works. Is there a way I can easily make my own self signed SSL certs.

Also, where and how much, do signed SSL certs go for these days. I wanna run all my mail over SSL, but if you can't tell Mail.app to stop bugging you about the cert being self signed, then I'll definitely want to get a signed one to shut it up. You can tell safari to stop complaining about self signed certs, which is great if you just want it for the encryption.

I don't know about Server but, with bog standard OS X, you just use the Keychain Access app to create self-signed certificates. It is very easy.

If Mail is bugging you about the authenticity of the certificate, change its status to Always trust (view the certificate... you can also do this in Keychain Access... and toggle the setting).

Go to geotrust and you'll see how much the costs will be. I set some up for my company (on a windows box) and the cost was 250 for one cert.

So turns out thats pretty much the same thing they built into the Server Admin certificate tab. So I made a new self signed cert and all is well, except... I tell mail to always trust this cert for this domain, but it only lasts until I quit mail. When I reopen mail, I have to tell it to always trust again, which is a pain cause i have 6 domains and so 6 email addresses and 6 'always trust' windows. How can I make it permanent?

Sorry for the delayed response - I was away for several days. I believe that all you need to do is do the equivalent in Keychain Access (where you will see more options) and it will stick, but I don't have enough experience with the issue to be 100% sure.
