I'm a newbie and am confused with file sharing. What is the best method of allowing someone to access my files via the internet. I have a MacBook using 10:5.

Alternatively, you can turn on FTP or have someone SSH/SFTP to your computer.

Go into the sharing preference and turn on FTP, preferably secured... then sign up for a dynamic DNS service so the other person can always go to the same 'place' to get your files... then poke some holes in your home router to allow it to work.
It has its uses, but for what you want to do it's a big hassle compared to FolderShare.

Mike, there are many ways, but most of them require some degree of technical expertise.
If Foldershare is good enough, then I'd propose you stick with it for now.
If not, then you have basically three choices
1) FTP: will allow read-only (for all intents and purposes)
2) AFP: read and write access to files
3) SSH (or AFP over SSH): secure (encrypted) access, or access from Terminal (command line, UNIX style)
In addition, you'd need to get knowledgeable on how to open ports on your router (if you are NOT directly connected to the internet), and how to use services like DynDNS to set up a internet address that will make your IP accessible for others.
If you need more info, I'd suggest you start googling those terms, like "FTP for begginers" or "FTP FAQ" and "FTP on OS X". This should give you plenty of info.
THEN, if you have a specific question, come back and ask it here.
There is just NO way we can give you a quick primer on all of this, specially when the resources are out there on the internet.
