Alt eject puts it to sleep, not shut all the way off.

Tetenal's answer is Control-Eject, not Option (Alt)-Eject, which brings up the Shutdown dialog. You then hit Return or Enter to shutdown.

If you know for sure that you will shut down then skip the dialog choice and press ctrl, option (alt), apple, and eject keys to go straight to shutting down. You might have to hold them for a split second until your computer starts the process of shutting down.
Also if you want to go straight to sleep mode then press option (alt), apple, and eject keys. There's no need for using a dialog if you know what you want.

Don't forget Control+Command+Eject to restart.
