Well, I just performed the transplant I documented here:

http://forums.macnn.com/90/mac-os-x/...-time-machine/

It seems to have gone fine after some initial dock constant crashing (replaced com.apple.dock.plist and com.apple.dock.db from old hard drive to fix). Boot time seems *much* faster (only about 6 to 8 spins of the old gear compared to sometimes 25 to 30 with the stock Apple drive). Strange thing though: the new disk does not appear in the Startup Disk preference pane. Hooking up the old disk in the Passport case does show up in Startup Disk. Weird. Why would this be? Should I be concerned?

Thanks,
Steve

I think I made a classic error: I did not partition the new drive as GUID. Why this is not the default setting for an Intel Mac, I have no idea. After partitioning and running SuperDuper again overnight, the disk finally appears in Startup Disk.

It is the default on Intel Macs. However, if the drive shipped with a partition format already on it, Disk Utility won't change it. You have to.
