Now when I try to log after typing my password it shows the blue screen for a second and then goes right back to the login/password screen. This is very frustrating. Anybody have any ideas on what to do? Thanks.

Restart in safe mode (hold shift while booting). What happens? If all appears fine reboot again w/o shift and see if the problem has disappeared.
Otherwise start in single user mode (hold cmd-s while booting). What happens?

OK, I tried the safe mode boot this morning and the same problem occurred. What am I supposed to look for when I do the single user mode? I'm about to go to class and when I get back I'm going to call Apple. This iMac is a little over a month old and shouldn't be giving me these problems. The other night it took six minutes to boot up! I called Apple and this one guy was telling me to do all these things and we got disconnected. I called back and I got someone else who just told me to disconnect my ipod shuffle and iphone dock and then disconnect the power cord from the back for a minute and then restart. It restarted like it should but why did I have that problem in the first place?

After being on the phone with Apple for 30 minutes, I'm currently doing a archive/reinstall of Leopard. None of their 'troubleshooting' worked... Yet all of the stuff they told me was basically what I've already tried... So we'll see what happens. Hopefully I won't be making the hour and a half trip to Atlanta to the Apple store. Gas is expensive.

Didn't you say it restarted like it should after you disconnected the peripherals? No need to go in for repairs if it's already working. Sometimes peripherals plus system updates causes problems. Usually a good idea to unplug all of them before and after an update.

That was a prior problem. That happened about a week ago. This whole login to blue screen back to login is a new problem.

OK. Let us know how the archive-install goes. That's usually a quick way to fix things.

I'm posting this from my iMac now. It was a pain in the butt and took all morning.. I don't know what you meant by a 'quick' fix... I guess it is quicker than driving to ATL .. well then again it took about as long. The updates after the install almost took as long as the archive-install but there are no problems.. for now.... Thanks Simon and Cold Warrior for your help.
